Kiss and Tell...

Please help me say 'NO' to BSL by submitting drawings done by you or other family members of your lovely pit bull. (Get kids of all ages involved. Remember, adults are big kids.) These drawings will be compiled into a book called "Pit Bull Truths" and all proceeds of the book sale will go to spreading the word of the wonderful dogs that are pit bulls. After the book is published you will be able to buy the book off of the link I will post here later on. Please send color images (hand drawings, Windows Paint, etc) of your pit bulls to me at my email address: iotaamoeba@hotmail.com in attachment form. Please write the subject as Pit Bull Picture. The book will be 9inches by 7inches in landscape orientation. Also include your pit's name and your first name. If your child drew the picture please include the child's age. Feel free to submit multiple drawings and please spread the word to other pit bull lovers. I am also taking photo submissions and am highly interested in seeing pictures of pits with kids and with other animals.

I would like to thank Jason from pitbulllovers.com, Micah at pounderpits.com, and Glenn from ripitstop.tripod.com for the help they have given me. Please visit their sites as well as Micah's other site http://www.banbsl.com (Let's Ban BSL).

I would like to announce that two of the groups that proceeds will be going to are Out of the Pits and Pit Prints Rescue. I hope to be able to add to this once the book gets released. I am always looking for more good groups to give to. If you know of one feel free to email me.

NO BSL!!!

Before reading this any further, I want you all to play a game. I want you to see if you can find the pit bull out of the series of dog pictures. http://www.understand-a-bull.com/Findthebull/findpitbull_v3.html I got it on the first try, but I think it was just a lucky guess.

So how did you do? It’s kind of difficult isn’t it? Could it possibly be because ‘pit bull’ is a term used for three different dog breeds? The American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are all ‘pit bulls.’

Pit bulls love people-ask anyone who owns a pit bull and he or she will tell you about the love a pit gives. They are not bad dogs, yet they have a bad reputation because of the bad owners out there that use them in dogfights and as guard dogs. Sure, they might look intimidating, look at the size of their heads, but that big head of theirs is connected to a big tongue always ready to give kisses.

Unfortunately, because of the few bad owners and a bad reputation, many are afraid of this gentle animal, so much so that Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) has been enacted in different areas of the US and Canada banning the pit bull. Use this link to see if an area near you has enacted BSL http://www.understand-a-bull.com/BSL/Locations/BSLListings.htm

There are many problems with BSL, one reason being that it is so hard to tell what a pit bull actually is. If you have a hard time picking out the pit bull, think of the rest of the population. Even if you don’t have a pit bull you can still be affected if your dog even slightly resembles a pit. You could have a wonderful dog, but if it looks like a pit it is “vicious.” It’s like saying everyone with blue eyes cannot be trusted because once upon a time someone with blue eyes lied. Even if you don’t live in an area that has BSL, if you drive through a BSL area with your dog, your dog can be taken and even killed.

If BSL continues to spread, responsible owners and good dogs will be hurt. If you think about it, those bad owners will start to use other dog breeds or keep their dogs with out care for the law. Many people own or have owned pit bulls including these celebrities: Thomas Edison, Brad Pitt, Humphrey Bogart, Mary Tyler Moore, Steve Erwin, President Woodrow Wilson, and Helen Keller.

There are measures out there that could be taken instead of enacting BSL:

  1. Strengthen and enforce leash laws. Make the penalties for loose dogs higher.
  2. Strengthen and enforce the laws when it comes to these bad owners and their dogs.
  3. Get tougher on dog fighting rings.
  4. Prevent those with records of having fighting dogs or of animal abuse from keeping pets.
  5. Encourage good animal ownership.
  6. Go to obedience classes and encourage others to participate.
  7. Spay and Neuter your pet.

The AKC, AVMA, and the ASPCA among others, are against BSL. Please help stop BSL from spreading.
